1ST ANNUAL K-9 TALENT SHOW AND COSTUME CONTEST IS A HUGE SUCCESS!
The Animals Committee put on quite a show at the EHDA Fall Picnic, held in Williamson Park on October 3rd. More than 25 dogs were entered in the “K-9 Talent Show and Costume Contest,” which is sure to become an Evergreen tradition. The grand prize winners in each of the two categories received a blue ribbon and a gift bag filled with over $50 worth of pooch pampering items (gourmet treats, grooming items and toys) donated by Wags & Whiskers. Every dog who entered the contest won a prize for either their costume or for their unique talent – from “best tail wag” to “most spunk per pound” -- and went home with a ribbon or a medal and a “goodie bag.” These valuable goodie bag prizes contained a certificate for a free pet sit or dog walk” (donated by Animal House Pet Sitting), a free “self service dog wash” coupon, and a free pass to the Showcase of Dogs (donated by Hollywood Pet Star), plus a discount coupon for pet sitting or training services (donated by Positive Paws) and a bag of homemade dog treats (donated by the Animals Committee).

All of the dogs (and their humans) performed beautifully at the show and seemed to have a great time. All were truly “winners” but the Animals Committee wants to pay a special tribute to Max, who won the “Best Smile” Contest. Max was entered by his human companion Leslie Watson. Sadly, Max passed away unexpectedly on the Wednesday after the contest. The Animals Committee extends deepest sympathies to Leslie and knows that Max will be missed by all of his friends in Evergreen.
In addition to the contests, the Animals Committee set up a booth to distribute educational information (and free t-shirts donated by The Pet Gazette) and sell fundraising items. These included homemade dog treats and bandannas, handmade catnip toys, the new Evergreen key/dog tags and gift items like the beautiful “framed pet quotations” donated by Deborah Camp of Four Legged Fur people. We raised almost $300 for Animals Committee projects and the soon-to-be-established "emergency animals fund."

Contest Judges: Andria Cline, Chris Cothern, and Frank Sousoulas for doing a terrific job "winging it!" and being excellent judges!

Laura Hajar for taking all the wonderful photos of the contest.
Jennifer Henry for handling the money and spending all day in the sun watching our booth, and to her husband Chris Cothern for helping out there as well.
